Ali draws from such themes as the surreal, the occult, and the whimsical in her work. Her work is greatly informed by storytelling and folklore, often focusing on poetic or other ephemeral forms of cultural production and oral traditions. Subjects of interest to Ali’s work include the intersection of 19th-early 20th century communication technology and Victorian Spiritualism, early cinema and stage practical effects and the esoteric. Her work also engages with themes around the body (ex. autonomy, performance, spectatorship, etc.) and gender performance.
